GMT Restoration & Conservation Project in North Sumatra
001-OxC Blue Carbon Corridor is GMT’s flagship blue carbon initiative in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Designed as a multi-phase conservation and restoration programme, the corridor approach enables long-term ecosystem protection while delivering measurable climate, biodiversity, and community benefits.
Launched in 2021 in Langkat Regency (Sumatra 1), the project established the foundation for community-led avoided deforestation. Sumatra 2 (2024) expanded the conservation footprint within Langkat, and Sumatra 3 (2026, planned) will extend the corridor into Deli Serdang Regency.
The project follows a dual-certification pathway, with conservation areas assessed under the OxCarbon Standard using KACSAT methodology, and restoration areas progressing under Gold Standard’s Blue Carbon framework. It is developed with support from UBS Climate Collective and Marex, and is implemented on the ground with our local partner YAGASU, who leads community engagement and field-level execution across project site.
A six-year reflection on evolving our mission, scaling impact with technology, strengthening ecosystems through education and finance, learning from challenges, and shaping a collective global vision for mangrove conservation.
