Global Mangrove Trust’s Blue Carbon Restoration Project – Sumatra 1, part of our Blue Carbon Corridor programme in Indonesia, has become the first blue carbon project to receive Gold Standard Design Certification. The milestone recognises the project’s robust design, including its methodology, emissions accounting, monitoring framework, and environmental and social safeguards.
Implemented across four villages in North Sumatra, the project combines science-based mangrove restoration with community-led conservation and sustainable livelihoods, demonstrating how high-integrity blue carbon projects can deliver measurable climate, biodiversity, and social outcomes. As part of GMT’s broader vision to scale mangrove restoration across Indonesia through a Programme of Activities, this achievement marks an important step towards expanding credible nature-based climate solutions.
