Global Mangrove Trust

We are thrilled to announce a significant achievement in our mission to safeguard the planet’s mangrove ecosystems: Global Mangrove Trust (GMT) has been granted official observer status to the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This milestone is more than a recognition—it is an opportunity to further our commitment to protecting and restoring the mangroves that play a crucial role in our global ecosystem.

Being granted observer status is a gateway to actively participating in the global dialogue on climate change. This status enables GMT to engage directly in the UN climate change negotiations, offering us a platform to amplify our voice and strengthen our efforts. Here’s what it means for our work going forward:

  • Access to COP Sessions: We can now attend the sessions of the Conference of the Parties (COP), putting us in the room where critical decisions are made.
  • Opportunity to Submit Statements: Our new status allows us to submit statements during the official proceedings and respond to calls for information and views issued by the UNFCCC negotiating bodies.
  • Organizing Events: We have the privilege to organize side events and exhibitions, enabling us to showcase our work and the importance of mangroves to a global audience.
  • Participation in Workshops and Meetings: Observer status allows us to participate in workshops and meetings mandated by the COP or its subsidiary bodies, offering us a chance to contribute our expertise and learn from others.

Leveraging Our New Status for Greater Impact

As we prepare to attend the next Conference of the Parties (COP), we are mindful of the urgent challenges that our planet faces. The lessons and connections from COP28 in Dubai have laid a foundation for our future engagements. With our new observer status, we are poised to leverage these opportunities to continue our advocacy and action for mangrove ecosystems. Our focus will remain on raising visibility for these critical habitats, addressing biodiversity loss, and enhancing the resilience of coastal communities.

Looking Ahead: GMT at the Next COP

Our plans for the upcoming COP are ambitious. We aim to use our platform to highlight the crucial role of mangroves in mitigating climate change, protecting biodiversity, and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities. By organizing side events, participating in workshops, and engaging in dialogues, we will push for stronger commitments to mangrove conservation and restoration.

This observer status is not just a win for GMT; it is a win for mangrove ecosystems we strive to protect. It underscores the importance of collective action and the role of specialized organizations like ours in driving meaningful change. As we look forward to making the most of this opportunity, we invite our supporters, partners, and the global community to join us in this journey towards a more resilient and sustainable future.

The path ahead is filled with challenges, but with our newly granted observer status at the UNFCCC, we are better equipped than ever to face them. Let us move forward with renewed vigor, knowing that our efforts are recognized and supported at the highest levels of global environmental governance. Together, we can make a difference for our planet and future generations.
