We at GMT are excited to share the recent developments in the 001-OxC Watershed Extension Project, reflecting our commitment to environmental restoration and community partnership.

In the final quarter of 2023, alongside our partner Yagasu, we have begun to extend our conservation efforts to include an additional 1550.25 hectares across five villages in Langkat District, North Sumatra, Indonesia. These villages—Teluk Meku, Pulau Sembilan, Sei Meran, Tanjung Pasir, and Perlis—have now joined our initiative, significantly broadening the impact of our ongoing work.

Our teams have diligently conducted baseline and inventory assessments in 144 plots, selected by the KACSAT machine learning engine based on forest canopy strata and classification techniques. This crucial groundwork involved collecting soil samples and detailed information on local tree species. The collected data will be used to train the KACSAT engine and assess baseline carbon stocks.

A key part of this phase has been fostering strong relationships with the local communities. We’ve formalized these partnerships through MOUs with the leaders of each village, ensuring that our efforts are aligned with the needs and aspirations of the communities we serve.

This scale-up project not only aims to restore and preserve the natural environment but also to empower local communities, enhancing their ability to sustainably manage and benefit from their natural resources. The data gathered will guide our actions in these newly included areas, helping to cultivate a healthier, more resilient watershed.

We are inspired by the progress we’ve made and are grateful for the collaboration and support from all our stakeholders, including Marex, Oxcarbon, and Kumi Analytics, among others. Stay connected with us for more updates as we continue to nurture nature’s resilience through the 001-OxC Watershed Extension Project.
